Warranty & protection

Extended coverage is available on most cars on the lot — engine, transmission and the big-ticket stuff, explained in plain English before you sign anything.

Know before you buy

▸Powertrain vs. full coverage. Powertrain plans cover the big three — engine, transmission, drivetrain. Comprehensive plans cover most systems, minus a short exclusion list. Know which one you're signing.
▸The fine print that matters. The deductible per claim, the most the plan will ever pay out, and where repairs have to be done. Ask all three before you sign.
▸Timing. Plans are usually added at purchase and can roll into your financing. Some start when the factory warranty ends, so you never pay for overlapping coverage.
▸Transferable = resale value. Most plans pass to the next owner, which makes your car easier to sell down the road.

How insurance works in BC

▸Basic is ICBC, and it's mandatory. Every car on a BC road needs ICBC Basic Autoplan — accident benefits under Enhanced Care plus $200,000 of third-party liability. No basic, no plates.
▸Optional is where the choices live. Extra liability (up to $5M), collision and comprehensive. A broker can quote ICBC's optional coverage and private options side by side, and set the deductible that fits your budget.
▸What sets your price. Your driving record, years of experience, where you live, how you use the car (pleasure vs. commute) — and everyone who'll drive it has to be listed on the policy.
▸Pickup-day checklist. Bring your driver's licence, the car's VIN and registration details, and a payment method. A broker does insurance and plates together in one visit.

Work with a shop like a pro

▸Inspection before you buy. Before any used car changes hands, an independent pre-purchase inspection — brakes, leaks, frame, tires, a scan for codes — is the cheapest peace of mind in this whole app.
▸Get it in writing. A written estimate before work starts. Ask if parts are new OEM, aftermarket or used, and what warranty covers the parts and the labour.
▸Warning signs. Check-engine light, fresh fluid under the car, pulling when you brake, uneven tire wear. Small now, expensive later.
▸Keep the paper trail. Save every invoice. A documented service history raises resale value and makes warranty claims painless.

How an appraisal works

▸The guide. Canadian Black Book is built from Canadian sales, auction and listing data — not US numbers. For your exact year, make, model and trim it gives a trade-in range (low to high) plus the average asking price.
▸What moves your number. Kilometres, condition, accident history, options and local demand. Two identical cars can land thousands apart — which is why the guide is the starting range, not the final offer.
▸Estimate vs. real number. A Black Book value is an estimate. Your actual appraisal comes once the team sees the car — in person, or from good photos and the VIN.
▸The tax bonus. Trade in with a dealer in BC and you only pay tax on the difference between your new car and your trade — one more reason the appraisal matters.
